Valentines Day stems from an ancient legend about a priest who refused to obey the orders of the ruler of his country. This ruler decided that men made better soldiers if they were not married, and he needed many good soldiers. He decided that men should not be allowed to marry so they could be a part of his army. St. Valentine was a priest who could marry the men, but he had to do it in secret so the ruler would not get angry. He married many men against the wishes of the ruler.
When the ruler found out what St. Valentine had done, he sent him to jail. There he tried to get him to renounce his religion. St. Valentine refused, and he was executed on the 14th of February according to the legend. Before he died, many people sent St. Valentine cards to thank him for his actions.
